Dad October 9, 2010.

I shot this photo on the day of my Dad's last birthday about 6 weeks before he passed away. This was shot in Honokaa using a Kodak Disposable camera with a film expiration date of 11/2009 I believe. My Dad bought this camera and he hardly used it. I finished it off just last week here on Oahu. These pictures were sitting undeveloped in the camera for all these months. It is also quite amazing that I can get the photo lab to process these to CD as well as print and share them with you in these high resolution version. The photo was edited with iPhoto for Mac OSX.

This is a "scanned" negative straight from film. Using the "apparatus" in the other picture. Somewhere online I found a tutorial on this and combined it with another one about processing negative scans in Ps.
This is a shot taken in 2008, from a disposable underwater camera I bought at an auction for 1€. It had an expiration date of 2004.

Remote Camera Observations of Lava Dome Growth at Mount St. Helens, Washington, October 2004 to February 2006 (A Volcano Rekindled: The Renewed Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 2004-2006)

Images from a Web-based camera (Webcam) located 8 km north of Mount St. Helens and a network of remote, telemetered digital cameras were used to observe eruptive activity at the volcano between October 2004 and February 2006. The cameras offered the advantages of low cost, low power, flexibility in deployment, and high spatial and temporal resolution. Images obtained from the cameras provided important insights into several aspects of dome extrusion, including rockfalls, lava extrusion rates, and explosive activity. Images from the remote, telemetered digital cameras were assembled into time-lapse animations of dome extrusion that supported monitoring, research, and outreach efforts. The wide-ranging utility of remote camera imagery should motivate additional work, especially to develop the three-dimensional quantitative capabilities of terrestrial camera networks.

Dome of the Rock, Temple Mount Old City Jerusalem

Dome of the Rock, Temple Mount Old City Jerusalem

The most famous Islamic site in Jerusalem is the Dome of the Rock (Qubbat as-Sakhrah). An impressive and beautiful edifice, the gilded Dome of the Rock can be seen from all over Jerusalem. The lower part of the building which can only be viewed from the top of the Temple Mount is decoratively covered in beautiful tiles. It is the crowning glory of the Haram es-Sharif ("Noble Sanctuary"), or Temple Mount.

The Dome of the Rock is not a mosque, but a Muslim shrine. Like the Ka'ba in Mecca, it is built over a sacred stone. This stone is believed to be the place from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven during his Night Journey to heaven. The Dome of the Rock is the oldest Islamic monument that stands today and certainly one of the most beautiful. It also boasts the oldest surviving mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca) in the world.

The Dome of the Rock was built by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik from 688 to 691 AD. It was not intended to be a mosque, but a shrine for pilgrims.

These are the last of the photos taken by my daughter Courtney on her recent trip to Israel. This image, and all of the others, was shot with a Nikon Coolpix Camera. Processing by me.

Mount of Olives view movie

Mount of Olives view movie

This shows a panoramic view of the Old City as seen from Mount of Olives. Behind the Dome of the Rock on the left is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with two grey domes. The larger dome is the Rotunda where the tomb of Christ is located, and the smaller dome in front of it is the Catholicon hall. When the camera moves to the left, the grey almost spherical dome of Al Aqsa mosque comes into the view just inside the city wall.

The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible

The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible

Book Description How to make beer, wine, liqueurs, cider and moonshine whiskey. The author dusts off over 30 years of experience to tell you how it's done. He not only tells how to make darned near any kind of beer, wine, liqueur and whiskey you can imagine, he also tells you how to make the equipment to do it with. Ever wondered how a still is made? There are 8 types illustrated in this book and though it's illegal to build or possess a still, the illustrations are so complete, you could easily do it! This book includes plans and operating instructions from underground moonshiner manuals used in Mid East oil fields. Some are built with components found in most home kitchens. From moonshine, homebrew, wine and liqueur recipes, to stills, make your own cappers, kegs, scales and even a malt factory from an old freezer, it's all here!
Easy to read and humorous, this book entertains you with Alaskan tales and bootlegger's lore while you learn to make everything from beer and blossom wines, to horse turd whiskey and bathtub gin. If you could buy only one "make your own" book for the rest of your life, this is it. It's like getting a whole shelf of books for the price of one!

168/365 A cheer for the Beer...

...all hail to the Ale!

Playing with lights and beer - a great combination. I was looking to get a glowing effect on the drink, think it's 90% there, but I also now realise I need to properly clean my lenses and maybe sensor - there are a few dark spots that only come out in certain colours.... hmmm.

Used my nifty fifty to get a sharp focus on the glass and let the rest fade toward the background.

Strobist: A bit more complicated than my usual one-light-wonder. 430EXII at 1/32nd:24mm with a white/reflective umbrella to camera left to light up me Blaydon Race. Another to camera right, at 1/32nd:105mm with a Honl snoot and a full cut CTO gel. Then, camera set to tungsten white balance, which makes the CTO gel look white and the bare flash look blue. Crivens!

Homebrew Altbier style Ale

Homebrew Altbier style Ale

This is my Altbier. It has an amber malt profile but was brewed with low temperature ale yeast at 58 deg for 16 days then transfered to a cold secondary conditioning. It's my first all grain beer, and the inaugural brew for the keg and tap set-up i just installed. I should mention that it also has a touch of pumpkin pie spice to really ring in fall.

STROBIST:
AB800 @ 1/16th pwr bare facing at a 45 deg angle behind subject
SB-50dx @ full pwr facing top right of subject, wrapped in red tissue paper
flashes triggered with on camera flash set to 1/128th power

Homebrew Favorites: A Coast-to-Coast Collection of More Than 240 Beer and Ale Recipes

To its tomes on homebrewing and the recent Beer Enthusiast's Guide , Storey Publishing now adds a splendid set of beer recipes. They are sorted into chapters according to style of beer--pale ales, brown ales, porters, stouts, European lagers, etc. There is also a chapter on meads, which are not beers at all but brews based on honey. As the book's very first sentence asserts, the recipes are "for homebrewers"--serious ones. Each recipe has been submitted by a particular homebrewer whose name and comments on the resulting potation introduce the list of ingredients and preparation directions. Libraries with homebrewers already in their clientele really ought to have it, and wherever the book is added, homebrewers might just start springing up.

Lexi

Lexi

The idea for Lexi and the Denver skyline came from Joe McNally's Hot Shoe Diaries book. If you haven't read that book I would highly recommend you go get the dang thing. It shows you how you can use those little flashes such as the Canon 580ex or Nikon SB900 to create some really nice looking images. Granted Joe is a major Nikon proponent I suspect you could do the exact same images with Canon gear. The chapter that inspired me was about shooting and elf or something with a city scape in the background. Basically it was an image of a girl with a hoodie and the city scape all blue'ish like. While I was reading the book I also was in conversations with Lexi's mom, which is my boss as well at my day job, about getting some unique senior portraits for her daughter. You typically don't see senior portraits like this image and I wanted to try something very different.

The critical item with this image was the time window of good light. The window was only about 10 minutes as the sun was setting behind me. During this critical window the sky was turning from daylight blue to night time black. By setting the white balance of the camera to tungsten and double gelling the single Nikon SB-900 with CTS filters made the sky go all deep blue. I also dragged the shutter as you can see from the car lights streaming in the background. Lexi is sharp because the flash exposure was only like 1/1000th of second on her face but the overall exposure was 1 1/3 seconds. I did have the camera on a tripod to keep the building lights a bit more crisp. The single SB-900 in the Lastolite Ezybox was triggered with another SB-900 in commander mode on top of my camera.

During the shoot the SB-900 in the softbox did a thermal shutdown, which has never happened to me before. Apparently it was pumping out light at almost full power and I was taking a ton of images because I only had one chance for this image.

Where #3 sfp seems to be in relation to #4

Where #3 sfp seems to be in relation to #4

THIS IS BUILDING 4 - aerial photo overlay with thermal image - a pretty good match, but the cameras were at a slightly different angle - this is why some points mathc and others dont.

Looking at the purple shade, we can make some guesses. This purple is an overlay of where #3 SFP heat signature is. If we assume that the pool in #3 is intact and in the area where the heat is visible, then this Unit #4 SFP area is DIFFERENT. What can that mean? The buildings are supposed to be identical.

There seem to be some heated areas on #4 that are outside the probable pool area. Are these spills? Is water boiling over the top somehow, or leaking thru cracks?

TEPCO admits the water is at least 90C in some spots, which means it could be hotter elsewhere.

Much higher resolution US spy photos are in the hands of the US government, but they "shared" them with TEPCO and let TEPCO decide if we get to see them or not.

No matter how you shift that square around, it can't seem to cover all the red hot spots inside the building.
